ESET Smart Security 5 and ESET NOD32 Antivirus 5 are to offer new and improved functions for PC security. The company puts particular emphasis on the cloud-based ESET Live Grid early warning system, which is designed to collect data on current internet threats globally and in real time, and include this information in the threat detection process. However, the product isn't entirely new – it just used to go by a different name: ThreatSense.Net.

The whitelist is designed to reduce scanning efforts: the scanner will now exclude any clean files that have already been scanned from further checks. The products now also offer a gaming mode, an optimised start-up process, improved removable media control and an extended "host-based intrusion prevention system". ESET Smart Security 5 has a revised anti-spam module, an intelligent 2-way firewall and child protection.

The graphical user interfaces of both products have also been upgraded. Anti-virus protection only with a one-year licence costs £29.99, while the suite is available for £39.99. Users with valid ESET licences can upgrade to the new version free of charge.
