EFF and Tor The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has begun the EFF Tor Challenge to encourage the creation of more relays for the anonymising network. The Tor network relies on user-provided relays to handle the traffic that passes in, out and through the anonymising network which is used by activists around the world to protect their identity and circumvent internet censorship.

For example, Iranian human rights activists use Tor to access their web sites and blogs outside the country, because their sites are normally blocked by the Iranian government. As there is still a limited number of these relays, the EFF has created the challenge to bring at least one hundred new ones online.

To assist users wanting to create a new relay, the EFF has provided documentation on what Tor is and the different kinds of relays and a legal FAQ. There is also a video on how to set up Tor. When a user has set up their relay, they can register it as part of the challenge where the relay will be listed, anonymously, if need be.
