Like its predecessors, Vista includes native support for the IP extension IPsec, the standard for Virtual Private Networking. However, because this cannot simply be used as is, most companies use proprietary IPsec clients, which are often included as give-aways with the company's server solutions. Not only do they permit easy use and administration, they also make it easier to implement security policies for VPN use.

However, most companies are taking their time in updating these clients for Vista. According to a list published by Microsoft, to date only NCP has a Vista compatible IPsec client. Nortel and SafeNet want to release one at the end of March, Checkpoint in April. According to the list, industry leader Cisco has not even named a release date.

As well as the IPsec clients, Microsoft also lists planned release dates for SSL-VPNs. Microsoft's ISA spin-off Intelligent Application Gateway, with which the company intends to [ticker:uk_84682 enter] the market itself, is, however, not on the list.
