Cracker offers access to government servers for a fee

According to blogger Brian Krebs anyone seeking root rights to military R&D servers can apparently purchase access for only $499. Krebs and security provider Imperva report that an unknown cracker has a web site selling root access to various web servers used by military authorities in a number of countries. The web site offers a list of individual servers with an indication of the degree of control you get, along with the price.

Access to a server used by the Albanian army (allegedly containing "valuable" data) costs $499 – payable via Liberty Service. Or you can have access to a US National Guard server in South Carolina for the same price. Access via SSH is also available for a server used by US Army Communications-Electronics Command (Cecom), which says it develops, acquires, provides and sustains “world-class… systems and Battle Command capabilities for the joint warfighter” (C4ISR). Cecom and the National Guard of South Carolina have already taken these servers off the internet.

The cracker also offers for sale access to other servers used by US authorities in addition to general services. For instance, you can pay to have a normal web site hacked for $9.99, though prominent web sites cost extra.
