Computrace theft protection available for Android tablets

Source: Absolute Software At the the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Absolute Software has announced that its Computrace Mobile software for tracking stolen devices is now also available for Android tablets. Among the security options available to users is "Device Freeze", a feature that allows users to lock their tablets remotely and display a message on screen. The "geofencing" module enables owners to establish virtual geographical boundaries that, when crossed, will cause the software to issue an alert on the tablet.

When an Android tablet that is configured accordingly is reported as stolen, Absolute Software's Theft Recovery Team can collect information to establish the location of the device and pass on its findings to the local police authority. Computrace Mobile tries to provide business and private owners of suitable devices with a system overview so that affected users can respond quickly in an emergency.

The list of supported devices currently contains only one Android tablet, the Lenovo ThinkPad. Lenovo had mentioned anti-theft software when it introduced the tablet last July, but it didn't specify Absolute Software at the time. The recovery package is available on the Absolute Software web site, where a free 90-day trial version can be downloaded after registering with Computrace Mobile. Subscriptions start at £12.95 per device for one year.
