Padlock icon News International is emailing people who entered competitions and polls on the Sun's web site warning them that their personal details are being published on the internet. According to the Guardian, News International is sending out a letter which says the data was taken during the LulzSec hack which saw fake news of Rupert Murdoch's death appear to viewers of the Sun's front page.

Samples of files dating back to 2009 from quiz entries, contestant databases and even a forum for bullied people have been posted on Pastebin. Also on Pastebin is a message from a hacker calling himself Batteye, apparently unconnected with LulzSec, who published a manifesto rationalising the publication of the personal details. The Sun says that there are names, addresses, dates of birth, email and phone numbers in the compromised data, but no financial or password information.
