Having acquired security company Ironport, network equipment provider Cisco is extending its "Self-Defending Network" to incorporate Ironport’s e-mail and web traffic monitoring database Senderbase. Cisco states that this database gathers information from more than 100,000 Internet service providers, universities and corporations. Based on multiple parameters, it determines the trustworthiness of e-mail and web content servers.

Cisco has used the term Self-Defending Network to describe issues such as access control, firewalls, virus protection, content filters, identity management, QoS and VLAN network segmentation. Ironport’s Senderbase product will be used to add network traffic analysis capabilities to the Cisco system. The extended Cisco system is called Self-Defending Network 3.0.

Cisco announced the acquisition of Ironport for US$ 830 million in January 2007. The network equipment provider has already acquired software house BroadWare Technologies and processor developer SpansLogic this year.
