Nokia, the mobile-phone giant, is preparing for harder times and is selling its security hardware business to its long-standing partner. The two companies announced on Monday evening that Check Point Software Technologies, an Israeli company, is taking over that side of the business for an undisclosed sum. Nokia and Check Point, a provider noted for its VPN and firewall solutions, have been cooperating in the field of security for more than ten years. Tom Furlong, Nokia's Senior Vice President and General Manager Consumer Messaging, Service and Software said "This business suits Check Point well".

Check Point wants to strengthen its position in the security business with this takeover of Nokia's hardware manufacturing, having begun offering its own hardware solutions in recent years. Nokia says it supplies 23,000 clients with security hardware optimised to use Check Point's software. The two companies have been cooperating closely on product development for years, and the takeover is scheduled to take effect during the first quarter of 2009.
