SpamAssassin Logo The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) has announced the availability of version 3.3.0 of the SpamAssassin spam filter, the project's fourth major release since it joined the ASF at the end of 2003 and the first major update since May of 2007. Daryl C. W. O'Shea, Chair of the Apache SpamAssassin Project Management Committee (PMC) said "Apache SpamAssassin is the leading Open Source email spam filtering software package that is in use by national, regional and local ISPs, email service providers, Fortune Global 500 companies, small to enterprise businesses, all levels of the education sector, governments and private individuals,".

In addition to the usual bug fixes, the latest release features major changes in how SpamAssassin rules, the patterns that help identify spam, are updated. From version 3.3.0, rules have been separated from SpamAssassin's core. Previously optional in version 3.2.x, rules are now downloaded over a network using the built-in automatic software update tool, known as "sa-update". Alternatively, users can also install rule updates from a tar archive using sa-update. Other notable changes include improved IPv6 support and error handling, improvements to the DKIM plugin and support for Distributed Checksum Clearinghouses (DCC) reputations.

More details about the release can be found in the official announcement blog post and in the release notes. SpamAssassin 3.3.0 is available to download and Upgrade Notes are provided. SpamAssassin is released under version 2.0 of the Apache License.
