The updates released by Microsoft on the recent August patch day seem to have caused an unusual number of problems. Now user reports are piling up indicating that the patch relating to security bulletin MS06-049, which fixed a security vulnerability in the Windows kernel, can cause data loss under Windows 2000.

The error is said to occur when users use the inbuilt function for working with compressed folders. If the update has been installed, Windows supposedly occasionally deletes the last 4 KB of files when saving in compressed folders. If compression is switched off for the affected folder or the patch is uninstalled the problem ceases to occur.

The mass of security updates on the recent patch day seems to have caused Microsoft's quality control department considerable problems – the patch introduced by bulletin MS06-040, for a vulnerability in the Server service, puts the kibosh on its own Navision software, whilst the update relating to MS060-051, to plug a further vulnerability in the Windows kernel, knocks out software including Brockhaus multimedial. Further side effects of the patches forced the company to release a hotfix for the Internet Explorer patch.

Before the September patch day, which starts this evening European time, users should once more clean up their systems. In a bulletin, the Internet Storm Center lists all Microsoft patches from the August patch day and gives information on side effects, known exploits and an estimate of the urgency with which the patch should be installed.
