A member of hacktivist group Anonymous has claimed responsibility for the defacing of the Syrian Ministry of Defence web site (mod.gov.sy, currently not responding). The Anonymous spokesperson, @Anonymousirc, drew attention to the site alteration and linked to a mirror of the changes.

The text displayed on the site declares support for the people of Syria and their "determination to be non-violent in the face of the regime's brutality." It also calls on the Syrian military to protect the Syrian people, "Defend your country – rise up against the regime!" The message is signed "Anonymous", but examination of the source code of the page reveals a comment in the text stating, "mod.gov.sy was seized for the people by Poppy :)", and offering "Props to the hundreds of Syrians that had mailed this server with messages of protest over the past year. You're admirably, recklessly brave!"

A BBC report says that 80 people died on Sunday as a result of Syrian army assaults. The Saudi Arabian ambassador has been recalled from Syria and the Arab League has issued a statement strongly condemning the violence.
