AnchorFree launches Hotspot Shield VPN app for Android
AnchorFree has announced the release of a version of its Hotspot Shield app for Android devices. With Hotspot Shield for Android, tablet and smartphone users can connect to the internet using the company's IPSec VPN service.
According to the company, Hotspot Shield automatically encrypts each web session to secure the data being transmitted to the web sites and services that they access, regardless of whether connecting over 3G or Wi-Fi. The service also protects users against some online malware and can be used to circumvent blocks placed on internet access imposed by some carriers as, AnchorFree says, it provides "unfettered access to all web content from anywhere". However, the app currently only supports version 2.0 to 2.3.3 of Android; the company has yet to confirm when support for Android 3.x "Honeycomb" or 4.0.x "Ice Cream Sandwich" will be added.
The Hotspot Shield VPN app is available as a free advertising supported version from the Google Play store, formerly known as the Android Market. The company also offers a paid "Elite" service that offers a faster connection, technical support and removes the ads; this costs $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year. A version of Hotspot Shield VPN for iOS has been available since November 2011.
