You are correct in say “technically” there is no difference between
EV SSL and SSL. I believe EV SSL is more robust security
considering, stringent guidelines, and vetting process a site
undergoes to obtain an EV SSL certificate.
Interesting work-around in minimizing the confusion with unsecured
sites. I just want to add that like Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 3
includes a green-colored bar at the top of the chrome that displays
when accessing a site with an EV SSL Certificate. Similarly, the bar
is fixed next to the URL and contains the name of the organization
and the country. But there are some display differences between
browsers, like the fact that the organization name is to the left of
the domain address in Firefox and to the right in IE7.
