Thanks for your ideas that go much deeper than my comment.

I wholeheartedly agree -- this needs to be integrated into the OS.

Concerning Linux: I am quite happy with the current situation where
the distributor takes the hassle to provide me with updates. As long
as you stick to the packages supplied by Ubuntu/Red Hat/SuSE/... you
will get updates over the configured repositories. 
Ok - whoever types "make install" is on his own -- but that's ok for
me.
