Pressing Need for Federated Identity Management 17 March 2008 16:28
Being able to prove you are who you say you are is a fundamental
aspect of doing business. Yet with its home-grown approach, indeed,
capability for anonimity, the internet is the antithesis of this.
Now that the criminal fraternity are increasingly exploiting the
implicit, naive, trust on which the internet was built, it is surely
about time some inter-governmental, independent organisation or even
corporation took on the ability to prove identity in the electronic
world, when the customer needs it?
The latter certainly has had problems in the past (viz Microsoft's
short-lived passport) and certificates such as those provided by
Verisign provide a limited ability to "prove" a website.
Government organisations will always be suspected of an alternative
agenda - not least the ability to "remove" a persona non grata's
electronic identity.
Yet ICANN is more often thought of as "I CANNot".
