Linksys routers and other wired network equipment may also have a
problem if you intstalled SP3 with Zone Alarm still running.

(now WHY didn't Micros**t tell us about this BEFORE update completed
the install?)
Having worked out the "medium" setting on the firewall, in order to
download the new version, all was well until the router was powered
off on Saturday night.
Apparently, having AV running whilst installing SP3 can cause
conflicts.
(I am still working through the stack of 7 KnowledgeBase articles to
return access).
You cannot connect to an 802.1X wired network after you upgrade to
Windows XP Service Pack 3 support.microsoft.com/kb/953650/en-us
Device Manager and Network Connections may be blank after you install
Windows XP Service Pack 3 support.microsoft.com/kb/953791/en-us
Device Manager may not show any devices and Network Connections may
not show any network connections after you install Windows XP Service
Pack 3 (SP3) support.microsoft.com/kb/953979/en-us
... (search for "service pack 3 windows xp problems" and you will get
the idea)
Moral of the story:
1) Backup your data files (check)
2) Create a system restore point (oops)
3) Wait until everyone else has worked the bugs out before upgrading
even if it does fix a nasty security hole (double oops)
