The unfortunate thing is that phishing and malware attempts will only
continue to climb in number unless they become somehow ineffective at
tricking consumers. At VeriSign, of course, we've been promoting
extended validation as a potential solution, not only because it
allows users to differentiate between specific examples of "scam" and
legit but also because, hopefully, it will get people seriously
thinking about where websites are coming from -- who's authenticating
them, how that technology works, etc. It's particularly worrisome
that phishers are able to coax personal info out of users
unwittingly...I wonder what a truly effective outreach program (about
the green url bar, about checking padlocks, etc) would look like.
