Microsoft VBScript runtime error upon installing the updates 04 March 2008 02:18
Hello and, before anything else, thank you for the great service
rendered to so many users. Updating the OS has indeed become a
pleasant activity, instead of the nightmare it is without Heise.
I successfully used to version 4.7.1 twice on a fresh XP SP2 which
previously had some Autopatcher updates, as well as the latest MS
updates installed. The second time, building upon the first download
and in spite of system changes, your tool did it's excellent job,
detected what was needed and retrieved the extra updates.
The third attempt, tonight, failed after several scenarios with the
same error message:
-------------- quote ----------------------
Starting update (v. 4.71)...
Determining system's properties...
C:\Heise Security Offline MS Update 471

.vbs(168, 1) Microsoft VBScript runtime error: The remote server
machine does not exist or is unavailable
ERROR: Unsupported Operating System language.
C:\Heise Security Offline MS Update 471 [2]\client>
--------------- end quote -------------------------
The scenarios I tried are the following:
1. Used old version 4.7.1, trying first to build upon the previous
download and installs. Failed with the error message above.
2. Used version 4.7.2 freshly downloaded. Here, a sub-scenario
occured. The process failed due to a problem affecting the extract
tool:

3. I made the 3rd attempt, with the old 4.7.1 version, but a freshly
unzipped copy. Same result.
4. I then reinstalled anew 4.7.2, copyind over from the original,
working, copy of 4.7.1 the extract.exe file to the bin folder. The
process ran it's course, downloading everything and making the iso.
5. But, upon executing the UpdateInstaller.exe, it failed with the
the same VBScript runtime error quoted above. Back to square 1, it
seemed...
5. I googled and found something which seemed related here on the
forum in a post of Torsten:

Sounds like an incorrect WSH installation.
Please try to manually install
...\client\win\<language>\WindowsXP-Windows2000-Script56-KB917344-x86
-<language>.exe.
RTW

I learned quickly what WSH is, I found the KB mentioned by Torsten in
the quoted post, manually installed it, rebooted -- same result.
6. However, Ad-Aware notified me, upon finishing the install of the
KB, that a new value is about to be added to the registry:
---------- quote ----------------
Registry modification detected
Root:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key:Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
Value:Regsister WScript
New Data:wscript -regserver
--------- end quote -----------
and that the same key was deleted after the reboot.
7. I reinstalled the KB, this time without rebooting, such as the
value stays in the registry :). But the update process failed again
with the error from step 1.
At this point, I am out both of ideas and of spirit. Besides this
being a new system which I strive to bring to a state of
"perfection", not understanding what's going on is rather
demoralizing ;) ... I would appreciate your suggestions. And thanks
again for the instrument you created for us.
Sincerely, M.
