Kapitänleutnant Heinrich Lehmann, von seinen Männern respektvoll „Der Alte“ genannt, und seine Besatzung werden erbarmungslos von feindlichen Zerstörern gejagt und Flugzeugen bombardiert. Sie versenken feindliche Schiffe, geraten in schwerste Unwetter, steuern durch die streng bewachte Meerenge bei Gibraltar und sinken schließlich manövrierunfähig fast ohne Luftvorräte auf Grund. Doch immer wieder gelingt es den Männern, dem sicheren Tod durch nahezu unmenschliche Anstrengungen zu entkommen. Mit letzter Kraft steuern das U-Boot und seine Mannschaft den scheinbar sicheren Heimathafen an, das Schicksal und der Feind kennen für die Männer der U 96 jedoch kein Erbarmen.
