sones GmbH has announced the availability of GraphDB 1.1 Enterprise Edition for the Microsoft Windows Azure Platform. GraphDB offers a graph connected distributed database and a query language for extracting information from the graph. The Azure version is based on the APGLv3 licensed open source edition of GraphDB with added, currently closed source, components to add interoperability with Azure's Blog Storage and App Fabric.

Daniel Kirstenpfad, CTO at sones, told The H that there was no specific plan to release the interoperability components as open source, but added "we're always thinking about ways we can support the open source community". Although GraphDB on Azure is the first graph database for Azure, Kirstenpfad points out that the open source edition can easily be set up on Amazon's cloud offering and said the company is working on an Amazon EC2 version of GraphDB which will make direct use of specific services on the cloud platform "to achieve maximum performance".
