A few days after Novell announced a program for software appliances based on Suse, rPath has announced a technology partnership with the software vendor. The specialist for software appliances plans to include Novell's Linux distribution in its development platform called rBuilder. Software developers will then be able to base their appliances either on rPath Linux or Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise JeOS ("just enough operating system"), a streamlined version of Novell's Suse Linux Enterprise Server (SLES),

Software appliances combine an application – such as a groupware server – with a basic operating system that only provides the functions absolutely required. The result is a specialized "black box". rBuilder can be used to create appliances for real x86 hardware or for various virtualisation platforms, such as VMware, Xen, Microsoft Virtual Server, and Virtual Iron. Customers who create appliances based on SLES can still fall back on support from rPath. Certifications that apply for SLES are then also valid for the appliances made with rBuilder.
