qooxdoo logo Five months after the arrival of 1.5, version 1.6 of qooxdoo has been released. Project Lead Andreas Ecker says that the update to the open source "Universal JavaScript Framework" includes a number of "substantial improvements" and new features.

The 1.6 release of qooxdoo adds support for applications going offline. qooxdoo makes use of local/session storage and offline event technology and adds an offline event handler and offline data store to simplify using those facilities. This allows developers to create apps that can pre-cache data and will work without an internet connection; a feedreader demo app with offline support is provided.

New animations and transforms that take advantage of CSS3 features have been added. The qooxdoo functionality can also be accessed by "low-level applications" that use just HTML, CSS and DOM instead of the qooxdoo GUI toolkit. Other changes include the addition of an experimental REST layer, new mobile widgets, and an extended version of the interactive Playground with new mobile samples.

Further information about the release, including a full list of changes and fixes, can be found in the release notes. Version 1.6 of qooxdoo is available to download from the project's site and documentation is provided. The developers have also released a bugfix update of qooxdoo 1.5.1 as part of their regular patch releases.

The framework has primarily been developed by employees from 1&1 web hosting company in Germany and is dual-licensed under either the LGPL (Lesser General Public License) or the EPL (Eclipse Public License) depending on project requirements.
