qooxdoo Logo The qooxdoo development team has announced the release of version 1.4 of its open source Ajax GUI framework. According to qooxdoo Project Lead Andreas Ecker, the latest release "comes with substantial improvements in almost the entire range of the framework".

Version 1.4 of qooxdoo includes features that were previously introduced only as experimental previews, such as a new Test runner simply called "Testrunner2" with a lightweight, HTML-only interface. Developers can now use qooxdoo's object-oriented programming model to create mobile apps for smartphones, including multi-platform apps that will work on Android or iOS devices such as Apple's iPhone. Other new features include full support for base64 images, a new Widget browser and set of virtual widgets, as well as the addition of a new "Simple" theme which makes use of modern browers' new theming capabilities, specifically CSS3. Furthermore, Ecker notes that "more than 350 bugfixes and enhancements made it into the qooxdoo 1.4 release".

The developers also issued a point update, version 1.3.1, to the 1.3.x branch of qooxdoo. This regular patch release contains a variety of bug fixes, but includes no new features. In total, it corrects more than 170 issues affecting, for example, the framework core, browser support and the GUI toolkit UI. The 1.3.x branch maintenance update is intended for users that aren't yet ready to upgrade to qooxdoo 1.4.

qooxdoo uses JavaScript and offers almost everything needed for creating web applications with a desktop-like user interface. The developers say that HTML, CSS or DOM knowledge is not required. The framework runs in all major browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera and Chrome, regardless of platform.

More details about the releases, including a full list of changes and new features, can be found in the official release announcement and in the release notes. Version 1.4 and 1.3.1 of qooxdoo are available to download and documentation is provided.

The framework has primarily been developed by employees from 1&1 web hosting company in Germany. qooxdoo is available under a dual licence, allowing users to choose either the LGPL (Lesser General Public License) or the EPL (Eclipse Public License) depending on project requirements.
