ownCloud logo The KDE project has announced the release of version 2.0 of ownCloud, an open, web-based storage application which is designed to be run on a user's personal server. The major stable update includes a new user interface and several new features, such as support for calendar and address book syncing.

To share files, users can now send files to other members of their ownCloud instance or share a public link that can be accessed by anyone. Other changes include support for OpenID (consumer and provider) and additional installable third-party applications, key-value storage for KDE apps and integrated desktop notifications. A new music player has also been added that includes an Ampache server for streaming music to desktop players such as Amarok or Tomahawk.

In a post on his blog, openCloud creator and lead developer Frank Karlitschek says that the "most awesome improvement" is the project's quick growth. The team now consists of more than 15 core developers and has several other contributors aiding with translations, bug fixes and artwork. While the project has continued to gain support, the team is still seeking more developers to help with future versions. The next major release, version 3.0, is expected to arrive at "the beginning of 2012".

The ownCloud project was first announced at Camp KDE'10. Unlike other cloud-based services, such as Google Docs, Dropbox or Ubuntu One, users don't need to upload their private data to a closed, centralised server. With ownCloud, users have full control over their data and can access their information over the web from a variety of devices; users can also share their files with other people. It supports automatic backups, versioning and encryption using SSL.

More details about the update can be found in the official release announcement. Version 2.0 of ownCloud is available to downloadDirect download from the project's site; installation instructions and a live demo are also provided. Hosted on Gitorious, ownCloud is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPLv3).
