Future versions of openSUSE look likely to be released without Xorg configuration tool Sax2. Novell has announced that it will no longer develop the project, but will instead concentrate on desktop applets which interact with X.org's automatic configuration mechanism. Novell notes that the constant changes and advances at X.org mean that major design changes in Sax2 are already required.

As a first step, therefore, the Sax2 module will be removed from Yast in the current version 11.2 of openSUSE. although Sax2 will remain an openSUSE component and will be installed by default. However, this will change when the program is no longer compatible with developments in X.org and therefore obsolete. Sax2 is open source software and the community is being called on to work on developing it further. Readers interested in contributing to the project can subscribe to the Sax2 developer mailing list.
