openSUSE Logo The openSUSE Project has announced the release of the third milestone for version 11.4 of the openSUSE Linux distribution. This development preview is the third of six planned milestone releases for openSUSE, the next of which is expected on the 25th of November, and will be followed by two release candidates. The final version of openSUSE 11.4 is scheduled for March of 2011.

Originally expected to arrive on the 5th of November, the developers say that openSUSE Milestone 3 (M3) was delayed due to a critical bug in the software rasteriser of the Mesa OpenGL stack that would have prevented testing. The latest development preview is based on the 2.6.36 Linux kernel and features the GNOME 2.32 desktop environment, as well as KDE SC 4.5.3.

While the previous milestone included an alpha release of version 3.3 of the OpenOffice.org office suite, M3 includes version 3.2.99 of the LibreOffice community fork of OpenOffice.org. Package updates include Digikam 1.5.0, Mono 2.8, Wireshark 1.4 and version 0.11 of the Arora web browser.

As the development release is aimed at developers, testers and community members, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

More details about the development milestone, including a full list of changes, can be found in the official release announcement. The third milestone for openSUSE 11.4 is available to download for 32 and 64-bit x86 systems as a DVD or LiveCD image from the projects developer / get it section. The latest stable release is openSUSE 11.3 from mid-July.
