openSUSE Logo The openSUSE developers have announced the availability of the fifth milestone release for what will become openSUSE 11.3. In addition to addressing more than 50 bugs from the previous release, the latest development preview adds a number of new features. The latest development release is the fifth of seven planned milestone releases, which will be followed by two release candidates.

openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 5 features support for kernel-based mode setting (KMS), the inclusion of the Nouveau driver for NVIDIA graphics hardware and updates to the installation slide show. The developers also note that the cron daemon has been replaced by cronie and that the xdiskusage disk-space analyser has been added. Other package updates and additions include the latest 5.12.0 release of Perl, version 2.2 of the Parted partitioning tool and PackageKit 0.6.2. As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to report any bugs that they encounter.

More details about the release, including a list of the Most Annoying Bugs, can be found in the release announcement and on the Factory News page. openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 5 is available to download for 32 and 64-bit x86 systems as a DVD or LiveCD image from the projects developer / get it section. The final version of openSUSE 11.3 is expected to be available on the 15th of July, 2010. The latest stable release of openSUSE is version 11.2 from November of 2009.
