openSUSE Logo The openSUSE development team have announced the availability of the first milestone release for openSUSE 11.3. According to the developers, the first of the seven planned milestone releases is focused on testing "the build interactions between newly added features in openSUSE Factory" and includes several package and desktop updates.

openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 1 features version 2.6.32 of the Linux kernel, KDE SC 4.4 RC1 and the 2.29.5 development release of the GNOME desktop environment. The development release also includes the addition of a new desktop option, the "Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment" known as LXDE. The developers say that the LXDE option is well suited for computers with low hardware specifications because it uses less CPU and less RAM than other environments. New package updates and additions include the latest Firefox 3.6 release, version 3.0.1 of Mozilla's Thunderbird email client, Qt 4.6.0 and OpenOffice 3.2 Beta 4. As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to report any bugs that they encounter.

More details about the release, including a list of the Most Annoying Bugs, can be found in the release announcement and on the Factory News page. openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 1 is available to download for 32 and 64 bit x86 systems as a DVD or LiveCD image from the projects developer/get it section. An overview of the planned features for the final openSUSE 11.3 release can be found on OpenFate, the distributions own feature-tracking system. The final version of openSUSE 11.3 is expected to be available on the 15th of July, 2010.
