openSUSE Logo Andrew Wafaa, the developer working on integrating the MeeGo desktop into openSUSE, has posted information about the current development status on his blog and made a LiveCD image of openSUSE 11.3 with the MeeGo desktop at its current state of integration available to download. Alternatively, users interested in testing out the current development preview can also add the required MeeGo packages to an openSUSE 11.3 system via a one-click install.

Currently, the system still has some problems properly displaying the network panel and the web panel MeeGo uses to list recently visited and favourite pages. Users who have already worked with MeeGo 1.0 will soon discover other issues. For instance, the openSUSE variant doesn't start applications from a dedicated virtual desktop, but instead stacks the windows on top of each other. Adding a new web service in the status view opens the GNOME Control Center, rather than the list of all known services, such as Twitter or Facebook, which should open in MeeGo. Web services can be added through the Control Centre via "My Web Accounts" under "Settings".

Andrew Wafaa hopes that feedback from the community will help him to make the MeeGo desktop run more smoothly under openSUSE. As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Those who find bugs when testing the desktop should report them via the Novell bug tracker (Novell log-in required), choosing the Moblin entry in the "Component" field.
