The openSUSE developers have announced the release of Milestone 1 of the upcoming openSUSE 11.2. The release includes the latest 2.6.29 Linux kernel and version 2.4 of Mono, an open source alternative to Microsoft's .NET framework. Milestone 1 includes the KDE 4.2.2, GNOME 2.26 and Xfce 4.6 desktop environments. The fourth beta of version 3.1 of OpenOffice, an open source office suite, is included and the ALSA sound system has been updated to the latest version. The new Ext4 file system is now supported, however, it is not yet enabled for installation.

The release is intended for testing and is available as DVD images for x86 and x86-64 systems or as KDE and GNOME Live CDs. An overview of the planned features for the final openSUSE 11.2 release can be found on the distributions own feature-tracking system, called OpenFate.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes. Milestone 1 of openSUSE 11.2 is available to download. The final version of 11.2 (code-named Fichte) is expected to be released in November of this year.
