The openSUSE development team have announced the availability of the first release candidate (RC1) for openSUSE 11.2, code named Fichte. The development release includes a number of fixes, changes and package updates.

openSUSE 11.2 RC1 features version 2.6.31.3 of the Linux kernel and the latest GNOME 2.28 desktop environment, although KDE 4.3.1 is selected by default. New package updates and additions include version 2.28 of the Evolution mail client, Qt 4.5.3 and version 2.0 RC1 of Mozilla's SeaMonkey "all-in-one internet application suite". The RC1 release is also the first to allow openSUSE 11.1 users to easily update to 11.2. As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised.

More details about the release, including a list of the Most Annoying Bugs, can be found in the change log. openSUSE 11.2 RC1 is available to download for 32 and 64 bit x86 systems as a DVD or LiveCD image from the projects developer/get it section. An overview of the planned features for the final openSUSE 11.2 release can be found on OpenFate, the distributions own feature-tracking system. The final version of openSUSE 11.2 is expected to be available on the 12th of November.
