The openSUSE developers have released the fifth milestone in the development of openSUSE 11.2, code named Fichte. The fifth milestone includes several changes and updates since the release of the fourth milestone from late July. The final version of openSUSE 11.2 is expected to be released in November

Milestone 5 of openSUSE 11.2 features version 2.6.31.4 of the Linux kernel and a choice of either KDE 4.3 or GNOME 2.27.5 for the desktop environment. The developers note that, in the separate desktop kernel used by the desktop versions of openSUSE, they have disabled group scheduler and groups, disabled optimise for size and enabled full pre-emption. The release also includes several package updates and additions, such as Firefox 3.5.1, OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 Beta 1, SeaMonkey 2.0 Beta 1 and version 3.0.2 of the VirtualBox desktop virtualisation application. As with all pre-release distributions, the developers advise that Milestone 5 is intended for testing and not for production use. A regularly updated list of the most annoying bugs can be found in the project's wiki.

More details about the release can be found in the change log. openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 5 is available to download for 32 and 64 bit x86 systems as a DVD or LiveCD image in the projects developer section. An overview of the planned features for the final openSUSE 11.2 release can be found on the distributions own feature-tracking system, called OpenFate.
