openSUSE 11.1 reaches end of life
Originally expected to reach end of life status in late December, the openSUSE project has confirmed that version 11.1 of its popular Linux distribution is now officially discontinued and out of support by Novell. After 13 January (last Thursday), no new updates, including security updates and critical fixes, will be available.
Originally released on 18 December, 2008, openSUSE 11.1 featured the 2.6.27.7 Linux kernel and included KDE 4.1.3 and 3.5.10, GNOME 2.24.1, Firefox 3.0.4 and OpenOffice.org 3. As well as separating free and proprietary software, it also included revamped Yast modules and improvements to make it more user-friendly than previous versions. The developers strongly advise all openSUSE 11.1 users to upgrade to version 11.2 or later to continue receiving updates.
Releases of openSUSE are typically supported for two years. Version 11.2 of openSUSE will be supported until 12 May 2011 and openSUSE 11.3 will receive support until 15 January 2012. The latest stable release is openSUSE 11.3 from mid-July of last year, while the latest development preview is openSUSE 11.4 Milestone 5, from last month.
