Canonical, Cisco, IBM, Intel, NetApp, Red Hat and SUSE are to share management tools for virtualisation environments to help evolve the oVirt project. oVirt is to be the management layer in a completely free open source virtualisation stack based on Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM). The initiative is intended to create an integrated virtualisation platform which will provide, among other things, high availability, live migration of guests, and storage management. The first official release is scheduled for the end of January 2012.

oVirt was developed in the context of Red Hat's Enterprise Virtualization. The project follows the founding of the Open Virtualization Alliance (OVA) in May of this year. The aim of the OVA is to build an ecosystem around KVM.
