The first jQuery 1.5 beta has been released on the day of jQuery's 5th birthday. jQuery is a JavaScript Library that simplifies HTML document traversing, event handling, animating and Ajax interactions for rapid web development.

More than 50 items are listed in the change log for this beta although this is a 'concise' list and full release notes will accompany the final release. Changes include a rewritten Ajax module, the ability to subclass jQuery, many other enhancements, fixes to various memory leaks, performance improvements and enhanced cross-browser compatibility. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

A release candidate is due within 10 days and the full release by the end of the month. The dual licensed (MIT/GPLv2) jQuery 1.5 beta 1 is available now from the jQuery content delivery network at the URL code.jquery.com/jquery-1.5b1.js. The latest stable release of jQuery is version 1.4.4, a maintenance update from mid-November.
