jQuery Logo The jQuery developers have announced the availability of version 1.4 of their jQuery JavaScript library. What was expected originally to be a minor update has become fairly major, with a a number of updated methods, performance improvements and new features.

The developers set out to reduce the complexity of the popular methods in jQuery, implementing easier setter functions. For example, a number of setter methods, such as .css(), .html(), .append() and more, have gained the attr method's ability to take a function as an argument, with subset of those methods passing the current value of the item to the function as a second argument. The performance of the .css() and .attr() methods has been dramatically improved in 1.4, along with performance improvements in DOM insertion, a three times faster .html() method and four times faster .remove() and .empty() methods.

Ajax support has been enhanced with support for nested param serialisation, as supported in PHP and Ruby on Rails, HTML5 input types such as datetime and range can now be serialised and Ajax requests should consume fewer resources by removing polling. The developers advise users to first read through the list of backwards-incompatible changes before upgrading to the latest release.

More details about the release, including a full list of new features, can be found on the jQuery 1.4 API page and in the official release announcement. The release notes for version 1.4 of jQuery, however, have yet to be posted. jQuery 1.4 is available to download (direct download) from code.jquery.com and is dual licensed under the MIT or GPL Version 2 (GPLv2) licenses.
