Following six betas and a release candidate, version 2.0.0 of the open source digiKam digital photo management application has been released alongside the latest major update to the KDE Software Compilation. The major update includes a number of contributions from last year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) event such as XMP sidecar support, face recognition, image versioning and reverse geocoding.

Starting with the 2.x branch, all of the shared libraries maintained by the development team, along with the Kipi plug-ins, are now included and are known as the digiKam Software Collection. Other changes include the addition of a tool to export to the RajCe.net web service, a new grouping feature, a MediaWiki export tool, and Color Labels and Picks, which are aimed at simplifying image cataloging in a user's photographic workflow. A new Tags Keyboard Shortcuts feature has also been added to simplify the tagging of images.

At the time of writing, an official announcement has yet to be made on the project's news page or blog. Version 2.0.0 of digiKam is now available to download. Hosted on SourceForge, digiKam is licensed under version 2 of the GNU General Public Licence (GPLv2).

Update 01-08-11: An official release announcement has now been made. In addition to the new features mentioned above, the developers note that more than 230 bugs have been fixed in digiKam 2.0.0.
