digiKam Logo The digiKam development team has announced the release of a fifth beta of version 2.0.0 of its open source digital photo management application. One more beta is expected to follow later this month, after which a release candidate is planned for 26 June. Previously expected to arrive at the end of May, the final release is now scheduled for 24 July.

The fifth beta features the addition of a new tool to export to the RajCe.net web service, as well as a number of fixes for bugs found in previous versions. Earlier betas included a new grouping feature, a MediaWiki export tool, and Color Labels and Picks, which are aimed at simplifying image cataloging in a user's photographic workflow. Support for geolocation and a new Tags Keyboard Shortcuts feature have also been added.

From version 2.0.0, the developers say that all of the shared libraries maintained by the team, along with the Kipi plug-ins, will be included and known as the digiKam Software Collection. As previously reported, digiKam 2.0.0 includes all of the projects from last year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) event in which students partnered with mentors from the open source community to improve various open source projects. These contributions included XMP sidecar support and Face Recognition, as well as Image Versioning and Reverse Geocoding.

As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they find.

Details about the latest beta, including a number of screenshots, can be found in a post on the digiKam blog. The fifth beta of digiKam 2.0.0 is available to download. Hosted on SourceForge, digiKam source code is licensed under version 2 of the GNU General Public Licence (GPLv2). The latest stable release is digiKam 1.7.0 from the end of December.
