Zynga to acquire Flock social web browser
US game maker Zynga has announced that it is to acquire Flock, the company behind the Flock social web browser. In a post on the Flock Blog, Flock CEO Shawn Hardin says that his team "will help Zynga in achieving their goal of building the most fun, social games available to anyone, any time – on any platform".
First launched in 2005, Flock currently has 40 employees and more than 10 million users. Flock was initially based on Mozilla's Firefox 3 web browser. From Flock 3.0, Flock switched to using Google's open source Chromium platform as a base. The cross-platform browser automatically manages updates and media from several popular social services, including MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, Digg, YouTube and Twitter.
Zynga is well known for it's popular online games, such as FarmVille and Mafia Wars. Specific terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
