Zimbra The Zimbra developers have announced the availability of version 6.0 of the Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) Open Source Edition (code-named Guns N' Roses). The groupware solution from Zimbra, a Yahoo owned company since September of 2007, is well known for its included open source components, such as Apache Tomcat, MySQL, OpenLDAP and Postfix. The major update includes a number of bug fixes, performance improvements and new features.

ZCS 6.0 features updates to the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and support for social networking and media services, such as Twitter, Digg and Facebook, via its open Zimlet platform. The Zimlet platform allows users to "mash-up third-party web services" as separate tabs within the ZCS application. The new mobile API and AJAX UI allow mobile device applications to connect to Zimbra and overall administration has also been updated. New beta features include support for Fedora 11 (32 and 64-bit) releases and a new Zimbra to Zimbra Migration tool.

According to a post on the Zimbra blog by Director of Marketing Greg Armanini, Zimbra also crossed another milestone, 50+ million paid mailboxes. Aramanini said that "if all Zimbra users made up their own country they would be the 25th most populous in the world". After reaching 40 million, Zimbra has gained ten million paid mailboxes in the last six months alone. According to Matt Asay of CNET, the current number of paid mailboxes puts Zimbra "within spitting distance of IBM Lotus Notes (approximately 145 million paid mailboxes) and Microsoft Exchange (approximately 175 million paid mailboxes)".

More details about the release, including a full list of new features and upgrade instructions, can be found in the release notesPDF, the feature listPDF and in the provided documentation. Zimbra Collaboration Suite Open Source Edition is available to download and is released under the Yahoo Public License (YPL). Users interested in trying the graphical user interface (GUI) can try the live online demo.
