Zeta Components logo The PHP library Zeta Components is leaving the Apache Incubator and the care of the Apache Software Foundation. The Apache Zeta Component project was originally intended to become a new home for the eZ Components project after the core developers left eZ Systems in April 2010. But the incubation process, under the aegis of the Apache Software Foundation, has not proved successful – apparently due to a lack of participation in the project. The component library is now being moved to a new home on GitHub.

In April, Christian Grobmeier raised the question of retiring the project, pointing out that the Apache Software Foundation "is about community; ZC has none and it is very unlikely it will get one". In the two years the project has been with Apache, it has made no releases. Grobmeier felt that GitHub would be a better venue for the future development of the library, unless it restructured to releasing its components one at a time. Julien Vermillard then proposed a vote on whether the project should leave the ASF incubator, and with 5 binding votes for retirement and two abstentions, the decision was taken to close the podling (as incubator projects are called).

The developers have been working through the Retirement Guide, which details how to close an Apache project, and the mailing list will close soon. The project is leaving Apache on good terms. The new github project is organised differently, with each of the components in its own repository. It is hoped that developers will be able to more rapidly develop specific components, by using a fork and pull model. The software is still licensed under the Apache 2.0 licence.
