The Zenwalk development team has issued a LiveCD edition of its popular "Zen computing" Linux distribution. According to the developers, the latest release is one of the first live distributions to use the new Slackware-Live-Scripts, which from now on will be used for all their LiveCD releases, and consists of the standard Zenwalk ISO packages.

The LiveCD 6.4 release is based on the 2.6.33.4 Linux kernel and includes a new custom theme for the boot splash screen. Like the standard version of Zenwalk 6.4 from the end of May, the release also includes an number of updated packages, such as Xfce 4.6.2 and a "fast optimised" version of OpenOffice 3.2.0. For users that prefer to run Zenwalk Live on a USB flash drive, the developers also note that the Slackware-Live-Scripts include an option to "remaster" the live environment for installing it on a pre-formatted Ext2 USB stick.

Zenwalk comes in three different editions. The Standard Edition is the complete version, while the Core Edition is the Zenwalk system without X applications. Zenwalk Core is intended for users with limited space on their hard drives and "perfectionists" that prefer to have a starting point from which to build a custom desktop or server system. The Live Edition will run from a CD without the need to install the distribution and includes additional system recovery tools and partition tools.

More details about the release can be found in the release announcement. Zenwalk Live 6.4 is available to download from one of the project's mirrors and LiveCD User Guides are provided.
