Zenwalk Logo Following three release candidates, the Zenwalk development team has released version 7.0 of its popular "Zen computing" Linux distribution. According to the developers, Zenwalk 7.0 is "a milestone in the evolution of the distribution" that brings "several major changes at user level and system level".

Based on the 2.6.37.4 Linux kernel, Zenwalk 7.0 is the project's first release to ship without the depreciated HAL (hardware abstraction layer) package and it features version 4.8.1 of the fast and lightweight Xfce desktop environment. The developers note that, like Ubuntu and openSUSE, they have also replaced Oracle's open source OpenOffice.org office suite with version 3.3.1 of the LibreOffice community forkLibreOffice 3.3.2 was released earlier this week.

Furthermore, the project has changed the way it manages packages, no longer providing a "current" repository. Moving forward, the developers say that they "will provide a versionalized repository including extra packages, where all packages are 'certified compatible' with the given version (ie : 6.4, 7.0, …)," adding that, "The 'snapshot' repository will keep being an 'experimental' work-in-progress repository, as usual."

Further details can be found in the official release announcement. Zenwalk Linux 7.0 is available to download from one of the project's mirrors and LiveCD User Guides are provided.
