Zenwalk 7.0 with GNOME 2.32

The Zenwalk development team has released version 7.0 of its "Zen computing" Linux distribution featuring the GNOME desktop and applications. Zenwalk GNOME 7.0 is based on the 2.6.37.4 Linux kernel with BFS scheduler and performance tweaks, and features version 2.32.1 of the GNOME desktop environment.

According to the developers, the latest release of the Slackware-based distribution is "the last step before going to GNOME 3.0"; Fedora 15 was the first major distribution to use version 3 of GNOME. Package updates include version 0.8.4 of NetworkManager, the 2.32.2.1 Nautilus file manager, Rythmbox 0.13.3 and the latest release of the gThumb image viewer and browser. Version 3.3.1 of the LibreOffice community fork replaces Oracle's open source OpenOffice.org office suite.

Other GNOME applications, such as the Epiphany web browser, the Vino desktop sharing server and the Sound Juicer CD ripper, are available in the extras repository. The developers note that the deprecated HAL (hardware abstraction layer) package has been removed.

Zenwalk comes in three different editions. The Standard Edition is the complete version, while the Core Edition is the Zenwalk system without X applications. A Live Edition which will run from a CD without needing to be installed and which includes additional system recovery tools and partition tools is also available.
