Yahoo has released Sideline, an open source Adobe AIR-powered application that allows users to watch, search and monitor the Twitter public time line. The Sideline application, built with the Yahoo Interface Library, is a customised Yahoo interface to monitor Twitter, the popular microblogging service, for the latest trends and news.

Sideline uses Twitter's advanced search functionality to let users search and display keywords in posts on Twitter. The advanced search options allow users to find tweets based on specific words, phrases, hashtags and user names. The search builder also lets users look for questions and to find tweets by attitude by looking for emoticons. The application has a built in auto-refresh and notification system that alerts users when a chosen keyword or set of keywords are mentioned.

Sideline is released under the BSD license and is hosted on GitHub. Sideline is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and requires that Adobe's AIR technology is installed.
