XFCE Logo Several of the Xfce developers decided at the recent FOSDEM to launched a foundation for the light-weight desktop. The developers say they have been struggling with the idea of creating such a foundation for several years, but were unable to agree on the creation of a non-profit organisation for the desktop. Xfce was recently updated to version 4.8, after two years of work.

Xfce Foundation has yet to be registered but has eight founding members. Of those eight, Jannis Pohlmann was elected president of the Foundation's board of directors, with Nick Schermer as VP and Jérôme Guelfucci as VP and Treasurer. The initial board has a two year mandate and the first formal meeting of the board is scheduled for 1 March. The articles of association and other paper work with be published on the xfce.org website in the near future. Foundations can prove useful for free software projects by allowing the coordinated collection and use of donations, funding of resources such as web sites and they can also act as a repository for the copyright of the software.
