X.org Foundation becomes a non-profit charity
The X.org Foundation has announced that it has reached 501(c)(3) status and is now recognised as a non-profit charitable organisation in the United States. In a mailing list post, Alan Coopersmith – member of the Board of Directors at the X.Org Foundation and Software Engineer at Oracle – notes that this means donations made by US taxpayers to the organisation are now considered by the Internal Revenue Service to be tax deductible.
Founded in 2004, the X.org Foundation, often referred to simply as X.org, oversees the development of the X Window System (X11) standards and technology. The software system and network protocol originated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1984 and is considered to be one of the oldest open source projects.
