Arriving almost two months later than originally expected, X Server 1.6 has finally been officially released. Version 1.6 was scheduled for the beginning of this year, but missed its January 5th release date. The new release includes support for Direct Rendering Infrastructure 2, X Input 1.5 (including device properties), Predictable Pointer Acceleration and RandR 1.3. Version 1.3 of RandR, the Resize and Rotate extension, supports projective transformations and panning. While the proprietary Nvidia driver is compatible with the new version of X Server, the proprietary AMD/ATI Catalyst driver does not yet offer support for the 1.6 update. There are a number of bug-fixes and EXA improvements included in the release (EXA is the graphics acceleration architecture currently used in the X.org server).
