X Server 1.6 misses its release date

According to a report on Phoronix the X.org development team have now missed their scheduled date for shipping X Server 1.6. X Server is a major component of the Graphical User Interface (GUI) used by the majority of Linux distributions. At the X Developer Summit, January 5th had been set for the release date and until very recently, the project appeared to be on schedule, with beta releases appearing on time, but no release candidate appeared before Christmas and examination of the X Server Git repository suggests that no changes have been made since the 16th of December.

The X.org developers are working on incorporating some major changes, such as using GEM (Graphics Execution Manager) for memory management, revisions of DRI2 and support for kernel mode setting. When X Server 1.6 does ship, it will introduce RandR 1.3, device properties for X Input 1.5 and better pointer control and acceleration.
