The WordPress development team have released WordPress 2.9: codename Carmen. Whilst the most recent minor update to the blogging software was primarily concerned with plugging security vulnerabilities, this major release includes a number of major new features. These include a global undo function, meaning that accidentally deleted posts or comments can now be restored. This has allowed the WordPress development team to get shot of the standard confirmation dialog when carrying out a deletion.

WordPress 2.9 also includes a new built-in image editor, providing basic functions such as rotation, cropping and resizing. The development team has also made plugin management more user friendly, in that where previously each plugin update was confirmed separately, it is now possible to update up to 10 in one go. Version 2.9 also offers extended information on the plugin compatibility test.

Video embedding has also been simplified. In WordPress 2.9, it's possible to simply paste the URL for an embedded video in a separate line, with coding being taken of automatically. The 'Oembed' feature currently works with videos hosted on YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy and WordPress.tv. More sites will be added in subsequent versions.

As well as these new features, WordPress 2.9 also includes numerous behind the scenes changes. The version name 'Carmen' is in honour of Jazz singer Carmen McRae. WordPress is released under the GNU General Public License.
